CD Projekt RED Faces 'Very Dangerous Situation' with The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, Warns RPG Veteran

CD Projekt RED has long been known for its immense ambition, sometimes biting off more than it can chew relative to its resources and team sizes. This strategy has caused significant turbulence in the past—most notably during the launch of The Witcher 3 and, even more dramatically, the troubled release of Cyberpunk 2077. However, with their respective sequels, The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, slated for concurrent development, the Polish studio is stepping into what industry insiders are calling an exceptionally high-risk environment.

Why CD Projekt RED is Putting Itself at Risk with The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2

In a recent interview featured in the latest edition of the Summer Eternal Anthology, Mark Darrah—co-director of Dragon Age: Origins and producer of Anthem—shared a stark assessment of the modern AAA gaming landscape. Having witnessed both the soaring highs and devastating lows of BioWare, Darrah painted an alarmist picture of the pressures currently facing developers working on massive franchise sequels like CD Projekt RED's upcoming titles.

"The AAA industry has become hyperspecialized to the point of being hyper-fragile," Darrah remarked, drawing comparisons to monolithic projects like Rockstar's GTA 6. He explained that games of this magnitude require astronomical sales figures—often 15 to 20 million copies—just to break even. For a studio coordinating a massive team of over 500 developers on The Witcher 4 alone, target windows are notoriously difficult to maintain. "If you have an army of 500 people and you run even a month behind schedule, it can easily inflate your budget by five to ten million dollars. It doesn't take much for the gears to grind to a halt."

Lessons Learned and the Search for Alternatives

To their credit, CD Projekt RED has worked tirelessly to redeem past missteps, turning Cyberpunk 2077 around into a critical success and maintaining an overwhelmingly positive legacy with The Witcher 3. Nevertheless, the financial expectations of contemporary AAA blockbusters remain a looming threat. If upcoming giants like The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 fail to hit their monumental commercial targets, the fallout could severely jeopardize the studio's future independence and stability.

Offering a glimpse into potential industry evolution, Darrah pointed toward smaller, more agile teams as a viable counterbalance to runaway development costs. Studios utilizing moderate budgets and leaving room for creative experimentation—much like the team behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—might represent a healthier path forward for the role-playing genre.
