The Untold Story Behind The Callisto Protocol's Disappointing Launch

Years after the tumultuous launch of The Callisto Protocol—haunted by comparisons to its spiritual predecessor, the legendary Dead Space franchise—co-creator Glen Schofield has finally opened up. Having stepped away from the video game industry into retirement, Schofield has revealed the behind-the-scenes realities that led to his final project's commercial and critical stumbles. According to the veteran director, the primary blame falls squarely on KRAFTON, the South Korean publisher behind PUBG, which allegedly applied unrelenting pressure to rush the game out under unreasonable timelines during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blaming KRAFTON for Premature Release Pressures

In an extensive and revealing interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Glen Schofield detailed the immense strain placed on his development studio, Striking Distance, leading up to the December 2022 release. Despite pleading for a three-month extension to polish the sci-fi horror title properly, KRAFTON reportedly pushed forward, ignoring the human cost during a global health crisis.

"On m'a forcé de sortir The Callisto Protocol trop vite," Schofield reflected emotionally. Describing the severe toll of the pandemic—where millions suffered, team members fell ill on a weekly basis, and personal tragedies struck close to home—he emphasized that human health and safety should have superseded corporate deadlines. Yet, despite working remotely and coordinating through constant calls, the team delivered the game under nearly impossible conditions.

Tensions Between Developer and Publisher

Beyond timeline disputes, the relationship between Striking Distance and KRAFTON faced friction over platform strategies. Schofield noted that the publisher demanded versions for older generation consoles like the PS4 alongside the PS5. This decision required millions in extra funding and the deployment of hundreds of development kits during a severe global semiconductor shortage.

While KRAFTON deemed the game a total financial failure, Schofield and his team dedicated themselves to redeeming the title post-launch, deploying 86 patches and comprehensive DLC updates. Ultimately, the grueling experience marked a bittersweet chapter for the legendary creator, culminating in his departure from the gaming industry.
