"Don't go swimming": Australian police warn of "crocodiles everywhere" after severe flooding

Local police evacuated more than a thousand people across the territory on Saturday, deploying helicopters and planes to communities in remote areas.

Police in Australia's Northern Territory warned on Sunday, March 8, of "crocodiles everywhere" following severe flooding, noting that more than a thousand people had been evacuated.

Helicopters and planes were deployed to communities in remote areas to carry out the evacuations.

He indicated that "at least" 90 homes were without power and warned residents about the proliferation of crocodiles.

"There are crocodiles absolutely everywhere. Please don't go swimming. The message is very clear," he stated.

Worst Floods Since 1998

The Northern Territory experienced heavy rainfall over the weekend, with the town of Katherine suffering its worst flooding since 1998.

Police evacuated more than a thousand people across the territory on Saturday, deploying helicopters and planes to communities in remote areas.

Several schools will remain closed on Monday due to the flooding, announced Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro.

Australia's vast Northern Territory is one of the least populated regions of the country and is frequently affected by extreme weather conditions.

Researchers have repeatedly warned that climate change amplifies the risk of natural disasters such as bushfires, floods, and cyclones.
