Emmanuel Macron announces that France is preparing a "purely defensive" mission to "reopen" the Strait of Hormuz
Emmanuel Macron stated on Monday, March 9, that he is preparing, with France's partners, a future "purely defensive" mission to "reopen" the Strait of Hormuz and escort ships "after the end of the most intense phase of the conflict" in the Middle East, in order to allow the flow of oil and gas.
While visiting Cyprus, the French President also announced that France would contribute "in the long term" with "two frigates" to Operation Aspides, to be launched in 2024 by the European Union in the Red Sea.
In total, "the French presence, which will be deployed from the Eastern Mediterranean, in the Red Sea and specifically off the coast of Hormuz, will mobilize eight frigates, two amphibious helicopter carriers, and our aircraft carrier," Charles de Gaulle, currently near Crete in Greece, the president explained.
