Google is preparing a mode to help you practice pronouncing languages correctly.

For several years, Google Translate has become the go-to tool for quickly translating a word or phrase.

But faced with the rise of conversational AI, including a dedicated tool in ChatGPT, Google's tool has gradually lost its appeal, mainly due to translations considered too literal. To address this, the American giant is embarking on a strategic shift, aiming to transform its application into a true educational assistant.

A “Practice” mode to work on your pronunciation

Spotted in the code of the latest Android version by Android Authority, a new feature called “Practice” (or “Train” in French) could well redefine the uses of Google Translate. The goal would no longer be simply to translate, but to support the user in actively learning a language.

With this new mode, Google would introduce a much more interactive approach where, in practice, the user could listen to a translated sentence and then record themselves repeating it. Artificial intelligence would then analyze the pronunciation to provide an evaluation, along with personalized advice.

Thus, the system goes beyond simple audio feedback, as it also incorporates a simplified phonetic representation designed to be understandable to the general public. The idea is to make correction accessible without relying on complex systems like the International Phonetic Alphabet. The repetition logic is another element that would allow Google Translate to stand out, where the user is encouraged to repeat the exercise several times in order to gradually refine their pronunciation. This mechanism clearly positions Google Translate as a structured learning tool, rather than a simple utility translation service…

Google Takes on Learning Apps Head-On

With this development, Google is no longer hiding its ambitions, because by integrating a voice coach directly into a free and already widely installed app, the company is competing with specialized players like Duolingo or Babbel.

This positioning is also part of a broader strategy around AI, particularly with Gemini. Indeed, artificial intelligence is no longer just used to provide an instant answer, but to guide the user through a learning process. This approach has already been seen with the "Study" mode recently deployed on Gemini.

Finally, it should be noted that for the moment, this feature remains in the development phase and is not yet available to the general public. Initial tests suggest initial compatibility with English and Spanish, before a wider rollout, but no date has been announced.

Beyond the functional aspect, this transformation illustrates the fact that our everyday tools should evolve towards more educational experiences, where AI plays the role of guide. And in the future, Google Translate could thus go from a simple translator to a true pocket tutor…
