Google Translate: Live translation finally arrives on iPhone

In recent years, machine translation tools have progressed rapidly, driven by recent advances in AI. In response to this trend, Google has just announced the arrival of a new feature previously exclusive to Android: live voice translation in headphones.

With this iOS extension, Google aims to democratize an experience akin to a personal interpreter, directly accessible from a smartphone and a simple pair of headphones…

Announced on the Google blog, the feature called Live Translate now allows iPhone users to hear the translation of a conversation directly in their headphones. In practice, all you need to do is open the Google Translate app, activate the dedicated option, and connect your headphones to start translating a conversation in real time.

When someone speaks in another language, the translation is played almost instantly in the user's headphones, and if they respond in their own language, their interlocutor can also hear the translation on their device.

To work, this technology relies in particular on Gemini, combining speech recognition and neural machine translation to produce a rapid interpretation, while preserving certain elements of the original voice such as intonation and speech rhythm.

Currently, the feature supports more than 70 languages and works with any pair of headphones connected to the smartphone, without any other accessories.

A global rollout to accelerate adoption…

Until now, this live audio translation was limited to Android and a few markets. But with this new update, Google is extending the feature's availability to iOS and more countries.

In addition to being available in France, it is also accessible in the United States, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, and India. This expansion aims to test the technology in a variety of linguistic contexts, particularly with regional accents and local expressions.

A blow to competitors… and manufacturers?

Faced with competitors like DeepL, which are making progress, this development also represents for Google a way to strengthen Google Translate's position as the benchmark in machine translation. Furthermore, the company now finds itself competing with manufacturers of headphones specializing in translation… including Apple's latest AirPods.

However, Google's approach stands out due to its software integration, as the feature works with headphones already in use and remains free.

With this arrival on iPhone and its rollout in new countries, Google is taking another step in integrating AI into everyday life. Long presented as a futuristic promise, instant translation is now beginning to emerge as a concrete tool in everyday conversations…
