"It shocked quite a few people": traveling at 90 km/h on the motorway near Nice, a scooter stunned motorists
At 90 km/h on the highway, a strange figure was seen on Wednesday, March 4, weaving between cars. "It was exactly 1:15 p.m. I was on the A8 motorway heading towards the airport, near the Saint-Isidore exit, when I saw it," Gaïa, a driver, told Nice-Matin. There was no doubt about it. It was someone riding an electric scooter. "I was so surprised I wondered if I was dreaming!" Gaïa recalled. "He was going so fast I think he could have been caught by the radar."
"It was far too dangerous."
During his journey, the scooter rider created numerous dangerous situations. First, he tailgated a car to avoid the tollbooth at Saint-Isidore, Gaïa recounts, and then again when she noticed her speedometer had already reached 90 km/h while she was behind the scooter.
"It was impossible to overtake him, it was far too dangerous," Gaïa told Nice-Matin. But for the other drivers, remaining patient was difficult. The presence of the scooter on the highway caused significant traffic delays. "Cars started honking, and some motorcyclists even managed to overtake me, pull up alongside the scooter, and give it the finger—excuse my language!" Gaia told the Nice newspaper. According to Gaia, this didn't seem to bother the scooter rider, who continued on his way as if nothing had happened. "It shocked quite a few people that he wasn't stopped by the police, given the number of cameras there," the Nice resident pointed out. According to the Highway Code, electric scooters are prohibited from being used on roads where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h. Furthermore, the speed limit for this type of vehicle is 25 km/h, under penalty of a €1,500 fine.
