OpenAI's agreement with the US military has already triggered a resignation

Artificial intelligence is currently at the heart of numerous political, industrial, and ethical debates. As these technologies become integrated into sensitive areas, companies in the sector must balance innovation, economic opportunities, and social responsibility. A recent announcement from OpenAI illustrates the tensions that can arise internally. After signing an agreement with the Pentagon to allow the use of its technologies in military applications, a senior executive at the company has chosen to resign. This decision reignites questions about the governance and limits of AI in defense-related fields… A decision motivated by matters of principle. Caitlin Kalinowski, head of hardware products and director of the robotics division at OpenAI, announced her resignation on LinkedIn. In her message, she explains that her choice is directly linked to the agreement reached with the US government. According to her, artificial intelligence can play a role in national security. However, some of the applications mentioned raise major issues, notably the surveillance of American citizens without judicial oversight or the use of lethal autonomous systems without human validation. The executive insisted that her decision was not aimed at the company's teams or its CEO, Sam Altman. "This is a matter of principle, not individuals," she stated, adding that she has great respect for the organization's leadership and employees.

She primarily criticizes the company for announcing this partnership too quickly, before specific safeguards were established. For her, these governance issues require a more structured framework and more reflection before any public communication.

A partnership signed amid AI rivalry

This agreement between OpenAI and the Pentagon was concluded just hours after its competitor Anthropic refused to comply with an ultimatum from the US government.

The authorities wanted unrestricted access to Claude, and the company's refusal reportedly angered Donald Trump, who is highly critical of AI companies that restrict the military use of their technologies.

Thus, OpenAI ultimately agreed to collaborate with the US authorities, and in response to criticism, Sam Altman later clarified that the agreement had been modified. A clause was added to prohibit the intentional use of the company's AI systems to monitor American citizens.

But despite these adjustments, the controversy has left its mark both internally and outside the company…

A leading figure in augmented reality and robotics

Before joining OpenAI, Caitlin Kalinowski worked at Meta, where she participated in the development of augmented reality glasses.

At OpenAI, she oversaw the design of hardware products intended to facilitate the everyday use of generative AI, particularly in the context of connected devices.

This resignation illustrates the dilemmas faced by AI companies when their innovations extend into strategic areas such as defense or national security…
