The war in the Middle East, which began on February 28, is causing legitimate concerns about gasoline prices, even as the government tries to reassure the public while prices rise daily. The government assures that it will be very vigilant regarding unjustified price increases and announces inspections by the DGCCRF (French Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control). The fraud squad has received instructions from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance to conduct random checks at service stations. How is the price of fuel calculated?
The price of crude oil generally represents 30% of the cost of a liter of gasoline or diesel. Refining, distribution, but also and especially taxation make up the rest. The latter generally reaches 60% of the price. This includes VAT (at 20%) and the Domestic Consumption Tax on Energy Products (TICPE). The amount of the TICPE is set annually and included in the Finance Law; it is a fixed amount, the proportion of which decreases when fuel prices increase.
