YouTube is becoming more like television with unskippable 30-second ads.

YouTube continues to bring its TV experience closer to that of traditional television. The platform is now rolling out, worldwide, 30-second ads that are impossible to skip on connected TVs.

This development is part of a broader monetization strategy, as Google is already multiplying advertising formats on mobile and increasing pressure around YouTube Premium…

30-second ads now mandatory on YouTube TV

In a press release, we learn that the change concerns the YouTube app on connected TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. In practice, some users will now see 30-second ads that cannot be skipped, with no button to ignore the ad after a few seconds.

However, Google specifies that this format will not be distributed systematically. Its AI-powered advertising system dynamically chooses between several durations, such as 6-second "bumper ads," standard 15-second formats, and now these new 30-second ads reserved for television screens. For YouTube, the goal is to allow advertisers to reach the right audience at the right time, with the format deemed most effective. YouTube wants to establish itself as the new television. This choice is far from insignificant, as for several months, Google has been emphasizing YouTube's growth on large screens, and studies like Nielsen's also confirm this trend. Thus, the platform no longer wants to be perceived simply as one video application among others, but as a central media outlet in the home, capable of competing with linear television. In this context, the arrival of longer ads... Long, unskippable ads resemble a direct transposition of the historical codes of television advertising. For brands, the format is appealing because it captures more attention and offers longer exposure. However, for users, the experience becomes significantly more restrictive, especially without a paid subscription.

A strategy that could run up against certain regulations…

While this rollout is presented as global, there are already some limitations. Vietnam, for example, has imposed a stricter framework on unskippable ads longer than five seconds since the beginning of 2025. YouTube had to adapt, proving that some legislation can still hinder this development.

As for what comes next, it remains to be seen how far Google will go with this transformation. Indeed, 60-second formats are reportedly already being tested, even though nothing has been officially announced. This is sure to fuel further criticism of a platform that now seems willing to do anything to convert its free viewers into paying subscribers…
