YouTube Premium Lite becomes much more attractive without increasing its price.
A strategic decision, at a time when competition is intensifying and the pressure on ad-supported models is increasing…

Priced at 7.99 For €12.99 per month, YouTube Premium Lite previously allowed users to remove a large portion of the ads on regular videos. However, some ads remained visible, particularly on music videos, Shorts, and in search results.
Now, subscribers will benefit from two highly anticipated features: background playback and video downloading. Specifically, it will be possible to start a video, lock your smartphone, or open another app while continuing to listen. Downloading will allow users to watch content without an internet connection, a particularly useful feature for commuting or while traveling.
These options were previously exclusively reserved for YouTube Premium, the full subscription at €12.99 per month. However, this version retains several differentiating advantages, such as the complete removal of ads, ad-free access to YouTube Music, the queue feature, and advanced features like certain playback options. Note that, in the official announcement, we learn that the rollout of these new features is underway and should extend to all French subscribers in the coming weeks. A balanced strategy for Google: With this evolution, Google is directly responding to feedback from its community, which was demanding a better features-to-price ratio for the YouTube Premium Lite offer. The line between the two subscriptions is becoming more blurred, even if music remains the main differentiating factor. Thus, subscribers will continue to see ads on music videos and will not benefit from the ad-free YouTube Music app.
Moreover, this choice is far from insignificant, as the music segment is a highly competitive field against players like Spotify or Apple with Apple Music. By protecting this advantage, Google preserves the perceived value of its full Premium offering, while making Lite more appealing to budget-conscious users.
At the same time, the company is intensifying its fight against ad blockers, making the option of a paid subscription more logical for many users.
With this price adjustment while maintaining features, Google is refining its hybrid model between free, ad-supported options and paid plans. In the long run, this evolution could also challenge the hierarchy of offerings and ultimately question the value proposition of the classic Premium subscription.
