A Breath of Fresh Air for the Ghost Lineup
For years, the Brooks Ghost has been a staple in the world of daily trainers—reliable, predictable, and perhaps a bit stale. With the release of the Brooks Ghost Amp, the brand has finally injected some much-needed energy into this iconic franchise. After putting 40 miles into the shoe, it is clear that this is not just another iteration; it is a significant step forward that outperforms the standard Ghost 18 in both versatility and ride quality.
Price and Availability
Launched in July 2026, the Brooks Ghost Amp carries a retail price of $150. It sits in a crowded market alongside heavyweights like the Asics Novablast 6, the Hoka Clifton 11, and the Nike Pegasus 42. While it sits at a competitive price point, the value proposition is strong for runners seeking a balance between daily durability and a modernized, responsive feel.
Design, Fit, and Performance
The Ghost Amp features a notable departure from traditional Brooks design, sporting a 6mm heel-to-toe drop compared to the 10mm drop found on the standard Ghost 18. Weighing in at 9.3oz for a US men’s size 10, the shoe feels remarkably nimble. The upper consists of a thick, plush knit, retaining the classic 'step-in' comfort that loyalists expect, while an internal heel counter provides necessary stability.
At the core of the shoe is the DNA Hype midsole, a supercritical blend of PEBA and EVA foams. This combination provides a livelier ride than traditional EVA, while the new SpringRamp technology in the forefoot adds a welcome snap to toe-offs. The outsole features strategically placed rubber that offers excellent traction without adding unnecessary bulk.
Running Performance
During marathon training, the Ghost Amp proved to be a smooth, consistent companion for easy and steady daily sessions. The rocker profile makes the transition through the gait cycle feel natural and efficient. While it does not offer the extreme bounce of a full-PEBA super shoe, it is arguably the most versatile daily trainer in the current Brooks lineup. It manages to feel stable, secure, and sufficiently responsive for a variety of running paces.
The Final Verdict
While the Ghost Amp is a fantastic update, it faces stiff competition. Runners who prioritize maximum cushioning might still prefer the Brooks Glycerin Max 2. Furthermore, those looking for a slightly more energetic ride might lean toward the Asics Novablast 6. However, if you are a fan of the Brooks fit and are ready to move away from the traditional, slightly dated feel of the standard Ghost series, the Ghost Amp is an excellent, modern upgrade that brings the series back into the spotlight.
