After an agonizing twelve-year hiatus, the legendary Castlevania series makes a triumphant return with 'Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse'. Developed by Evil Empire, the team behind the celebrated 'Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania' expansion, this new 2D entry seeks to marry the classic gothic soul of the franchise with modern metroidvania sensibilities. Arriving on October 15, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series, PC, and Nintendo Switch, the game offers a fresh yet nostalgic experience.
A New Chapter for the Belmont Lineage
Set in Paris in the year 1499, the story follows Trevor Belmont’s daughter, Rose Belmont, as she navigates a city under siege by supernatural forces. While the overarching goal remains the familiar task of preventing Dracula’s resurgence, the narrative shines through its cast of characters. Iconic figures like Death, Carmilla, and Medusa cross paths with new faces, such as the legendary Joan of Arc. This blend of established lore and historical fantasy creates a compelling narrative journey that lasts approximately fifteen hours, accessible to both series veterans and newcomers.
Gameplay Mechanics and The Power of the Whip
The gameplay embraces core metroidvania pillars—exploration, combat, and precise platforming—within a labyrinthine structure. The signature whip serves not only as a weapon but as an essential traversal tool, allowing Rose to swing and vault across intricate environments. Although some platforming segments occasionally suffer from precision issues, the core movement feels satisfying.
The Tarot of Arcana and Weapon Customization
A standout feature is the inclusion of Rose’s tarot deck, inherited from her mother, Sypha Belanders. This mechanic introduces 'Arcanes,' magical abilities acquired by defeating bosses. Beyond supernatural powers, players have access to seven distinct weapon families, from traditional swords to lances and sidearms. This diversity allows for a customizable build-path, rewarding players who experiment with different playstyles.
Artistic Excellence
Visually, 'Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse' is a triumph. Whether exploring the fire-ravaged streets of Paris or the depths of Dracula’s castle, the art direction is stunning. The lighting effects and environmental details breathe life into the gothic atmosphere, perfectly complemented by a brilliant soundtrack composed by ASADI. Merging retro gothic tones with modern electronic beats, the audio experience is memorable and atmospheric.
Verdict
While the game avoids extreme difficulty spikes, favoring accessibility, it succeeds in revitalizing a dormant classic. Despite minor technical friction in boss fight visibility and platforming precision, 'Belmont’s Curse' is an essential experience for fans of the genre and a beautiful love letter to the history of Castlevania.
