Introduction

In an era where smartphones are getting progressively more expensive, the common advice for consumers is to hold onto their devices for a bare minimum of three years to maximize value. While the Fairphone 6+ is technically classified as a mid-range phone, the Netherlands-based company’s philosophy centers around delivering modular devices built for extreme longevity. The Fairphone 6+ stays true to this vision, but in a market dominated by strong competitors like the Google Pixel 10a and Apple iPhone 17e, it faces a steep uphill battle to convince buyers to spend $649 on hardware that compromises on raw performance.

Design and Modularity: Built for the User

The standout feature of the Fairphone 6+ is its industry-leading repairability and modular build. Unlike traditional unibody smartphones that require specialized tools, heating elements, and professional help to open, the Fairphone 6+ makes do-it-yourself (DIY) repairs remarkably easy. Users can effortlessly pop off the rear plastic cover to replace components, swap out a degrading battery, or even attach functional modular accessories.

Among these accessories are a magnetic wallet add-on, a finger loop attachment for enhanced grip, and a dedicated lanyard loop. While the aesthetic remains strictly utilitarian with a blocky chassis, thick display bezels, and an understated camera module that resembles an enterprise device rather than a consumer handset, its commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing remains unmatched.

Display and Battery Endurance

Up front, the Fairphone 6+ features a 6.31-inch AMOLED display with a 10Hz to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a 20:9 aspect ratio. While it may not feature the absolute brightest panel in its class, it achieves a peak outdoor brightness of 1,471 nits, ensuring great legibility even under direct sunlight. Color reproduction is punchy, and viewing angles are wide.

Battery life is another strong suit. Packed with a 4,415mAh battery cell, the phone managed 13 hours and 19 minutes of continuous use in custom battery drain tests with the refresh rate set to 90Hz. Furthermore, 30W wired charging support allows the device to reach 39% battery capacity in just 15 minutes and 71% in 30 minutes.

Performance and Software Support

Performance is where the Fairphone 6+ begins to falter. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, it trails behind its primary rivals in benchmarks. Geekbench 6 scores yield 1,314 in single-core and 3,674 in multi-core tests. Graphical performance is similarly lackluster, with 3DMark's Wild Life test showing an average of just 28.47 frames per second, leading to noticeable stutter and frame drops in intensive mobile games.

On the software front, however, Fairphone shines brilliantly. Running out of the box with Android 16, the phone is backed by guaranteed software updates and security patches through 2033. It also introduces a unique "Moments" mode—activated via a bright yellow physical switch on the side—which transforms the standard interface into a clean, minimalist launcher to help curb screen addiction.

Camera Performance: A Weak Link

Photography is perhaps the weakest aspect of the Fairphone 6+. Equipped with a dual-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main sensor (f/1.6) and a 13MP ultrawide lens, alongside a 32MP front-facing camera, the results heavily suffer from aggressive artificial sharpening and over-processing. High-contrast areas frequently blow out into overexposure, and low-light shots rely heavily on intense noise reduction that smears fine textures.

The Verdict

At a starting price of $649, the Fairphone 6+ is an expensive proposition for a mid-range device, especially when rivals offer superior cameras and faster processors for less. However, its true value lies in its class-leading five-year extended warranty, long-term software support through 2033, and unmatched modular repairability. If you view your phone as a long-term investment that can easily outlast multiple upgrade cycles—and you are willing to overlook subpar cameras and mid-tier performance—the Fairphone 6+ is a noble and functional choice.
