The Revival of a Cult Classic
While the Nintendo DS is fondly remembered for its stellar lineup of cozy adventures, casual experiences, and timeless RPGs, it was rarely considered a haven for survival horror enthusiasts. Yet, back in 2010, the platform played host to one of its most uniquely terrifying and gory titles: Dementium 2. Now, 16 years after its original release, developer Renegade Kid is taking its revenge, bringing this forgotten nightmare back to life on PC via Steam.
A Faithful Remaster by the Original Creators
Scheduled to launch this month with exact pricing and release dates yet to be announced, this upcoming version is a fully restored edition helmed by the game's original creators. Although Dementium 2 previously received a PC port back in 2013 without the original team's involvement—a release that faced a lukewarm critical reception—this new iteration is being spearheaded by Atooi, the studio founded by Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham. This ensures the remaster will stay far truer to the chilling vision of the original DS classic.
The updated PC version bridges the gap between classic nostalgia and modern convenience. Players will have the flexibility to toggle between a pristine 4K resolution and an authentic retro pixel look. Additional modern enhancements include a redesigned or classic flashlight option, and a toggle to silence the ambient background music that traditionally tipped players off to lurking enemies. Furthermore, quality-of-life additions absent from the original handheld release feature a PC-tailored mini-map, full gamepad and keyboard-mouse support, and an array of Steam Achievements to unlock.
Uncovering the Nightmares of Bright Dawn
For those unfamiliar with the lore, Dementium 2 places players in the shoes of William Redmoor. Awakening inside the oppressive walls of the Bright Dawn Treatment Center following a mysterious brain surgery, William finds himself wrongfully accused of murdering his wife. To survive, he must navigate the nightmarish corridors of an institution where the horrors hidden within the walls far surpass the dangers posed by its ordinary occupants.
Blending tense exploration, intricate puzzles, inventory management, and gruesome creature combat, the game delivers an authentic, old-school survival horror experience. As fans prepare to dive back into the madness on Steam, many are left wondering if this successful remaster will finally pave the way for a long-rumored, yet never officially announced, Dementium 3.
