As October 2026 approaches, the gaming community is setting its sights on a dark, ambitious new project: Valor Mortis. Originally slated for a September release, developer One More Level—the studio behind the hit Ghostrunner series—decided to push the launch to October 13, 2026. This delay allows the game to stand out in an increasingly crowded autumn release schedule. By blending the challenging, methodical nature of a Souls-like with a high-octane, first-person perspective, Valor Mortis aims to redefine the genre.
A Unique Historical Setting
Unlike the typical high-fantasy or sci-fi settings found in similar titles, Valor Mortis dives into the gritty, atmospheric era of the Napoleonic Wars. Players step into the boots of William, a British soldier fighting for the Grande Armée. After falling on the battlefield, William is resurrected with supernatural abilities that echo the narrative complexity of titles like BioShock. Adding to the immersion, the voice of Napoleon himself serves as a constant companion throughout the journey, performed by renowned actor Vincent Cassel.
The Strategic Combat Loop
Valor Mortis is not a traditional shooter; it is a tactical, slow-paced combat experience. Players must master a variety of melee weapons, from quick rapiers to devastating claymores. Every strike drains stamina, forcing players to commit to their actions carefully. To supplement their melee arsenal, players have access to era-appropriate firearms with limited ammo and mystical powers, such as fire manipulation, to turn the tide against corruption-ridden foes.
Defense is equally demanding, requiring precise timing for blocks, parries, and dodges. The penalty for failure is high: like classic Souls-like titles, death forces a respawn at the last campfire, and players must retrieve their lost resources while facing the constant threat of permanent loss if they perish again.
Ghostrunner DNA: Mobility in Combat
Despite its Souls-like roots, the developer's experience with Ghostrunner shines through in the movement system. William is far more agile than the average protagonist in this genre, with dash maneuvers and parkour-inspired mobility options that allow for fluid repositioning. This fusion of deliberate, high-stakes melee combat and fast-paced traversal creates a unique rhythmic flow that sets the game apart from its competitors.
Pricing and Editions
Valor Mortis will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S for $39.99. A Deluxe Edition will also be offered for $59.99, including cosmetic 'Grande Armée' weapon packs and an exclusive roadmap promising significant story-based expansions throughout 2027.
