As October 2026 arrives, the crisp air and longer shadows serve as the perfect backdrop for my annual horror movie marathon. This year, I have committed to an ambitious endeavor: watching one horror film every single day for all 31 days of the month, culminating in a cinematic celebration of the genre on Halloween.

The Found Footage Classic

To kick off this 31-day challenge, I chose one of the most influential entries in horror history: 'The Blair Witch Project' (1999). This film, which famously follows three film students—Heather, Mike, and Josh—as they venture into the Black Hills Forest to document the legend of the Blair Witch, remains a masterclass in building tension through what is not shown.

Why It Still Works

Returning to 'The Blair Witch Project' was a revelation. While modern horror often relies on high-budget jump scares, this film succeeds by leaning into the raw, unpolished, and terrifyingly grounded feeling of found footage. The performances from the lead trio feel authentic, making their descent into paranoia and madness deeply unsettling. The film’s brilliant decision to never show the entity terrorizing them allows the audience’s imagination to fill in the gaps, creating a sense of dread that rarely dissipates.

Addressing the Critics

Despite its status as a genre-defining classic, the film has faced criticism over the years, with some viewers dismissing it as overhyped or labeling the ambiguous ending as frustrating. Having rewatched it for my October challenge, I find these criticisms misplaced. The film is intentionally designed to be a slow-burn experience that demands engagement. The early interviews with townspeople, for instance, are not just filler; they are loaded with subtle foreshadowing that pays off in the final act.

Moving Forward

'The Blair Witch Project' set a high bar for the rest of my month-long challenge. As I continue my journey through various subgenres of horror, I am keeping an eye on the future of the franchise, particularly with a new 'Blair Witch' reboot currently on the horizon for 2027. If this opening day is any indication, the next 30 days are set to be a hauntingly good time. Stay tuned as I track my progress through this month of terror.
