Introduction: The Ongoing Evolution of Resident Evil

Since the groundbreaking launch of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017, Capcom has turned its premier survival horror franchise into a masterclass in modern game development. Balancing fresh numbered entries with critically acclaimed remakes, the Japanese publisher has successfully kept fans engaged across multiple generations. However, as the backlog of classic titles available for modern remakes steadily shrinks, players have naturally wondered what comes next. Fortunately, Capcom is already looking far ahead, teasing a grand overarching plan that began taking shape years ago.

Laying the Groundwork Since Resident Evil Village

As rumors continue to circulate regarding potential remakes for Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1 following the upcoming Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake, the question of the franchise's distant future becomes increasingly pressing. According to Jun Takeuchi, a veteran producer at Capcom, the studio has been systematically preparing for the post-remake era for quite some time.

Speaking in the special Japanese anniversary publication Nikkei Entertainment! BIOHAZARD 30th Special, Takeuchi revealed: "One day, the series of remakes will catch up with the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. To tell the truth, we have been gradually preparing for it since the release of Resident Evil Village."

Towards a Grand Crossover Event

The developer further hinted at how these narrative threads are converging. The deliberate inclusion of iconic lore elements—such as Umbrella, Spencer, and the emotional return to Raccoon City in recent releases like Resident Evil Requiem—are not merely nostalgic callbacks. Instead, they form the foundation of a massive "crossover" event designed to tie the classic timeline directly into the modern era established by Ethan Winters and Grace Ashcroft.

Interestingly, this master plan evolved organically. While initial references started as subtle fan service, the passionate community response caught Capcom off guard. Fans immediately began deep-diving into developer hints and lore clues, prompting the studio to lean even further into an interconnected universe.

With upcoming projects like the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake slated for 2027 and mysterious narrative DLC on the horizon, fans still have plenty of horror-filled adventures to experience before the ultimate culmination of Capcom's grand vision.
