The Rocky Road of Cyberpunk 2077
Three years after the release of the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt RED continues to grapple with the emotional and professional scars left by the catastrophic launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020. What was arguably one of the most anticipated video games in history turned into a public relations disaster, plagued by severe bugs, performance issues, and broken promisesâparticularly on last-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The fallout nearly ruined the Polish developer's sterling reputation and financial standing.
A Historic Redemption Arc
Through years of relentless updates, patches, and the game-changing 2.0 overhaul alongside the Phantom Liberty DLC, CD Projekt RED managed an incredible turnaround. The title transformed into the visionary sci-fi RPG fans were originally promised, breathing new life into the franchise, which was further boosted by successful spin-offs like the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
However, quest director Pawel Sasko admitted in a poignant emotional reflection that Phantom Liberty does not simply erase the tumultuous launch. Sharing his thoughts on social media, he noted, "I hope Cyberpunk 2077 has earned its place in your eyes," emphasizing the deep lessons learned over the past six years regarding game direction, multidisciplinary teamwork, and player expectations.
Lessons for the Future
The trauma of 2020 fundamentally altered how CD Projekt RED operates. The studio has shifted toward highly collaborative, cross-functional teams to streamline development and ensure better quality control. As the studio looks forward to future projects, including the highly anticipated sequel and The Witcher 4, the industry watches closely to see if these hard-earned lessons will secure a smoother path forward.
