Following the monumental success of Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3, anticipation for future Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) video game adaptations is at an all-time high. However, Invoke Studios has come forward to clarify that their upcoming project, titled Warlock, will offer a drastically different experience than the beloved CRPG predecessor.

A New Direction for D&D

Unlike the expansive, player-driven narrative structure of Baldur's Gate 3, Warlock is being designed with a more focused, linear approach. Studio manager Dominique Guay emphasized the studio's clear stance on the game's direction in a recent interview with Eurogamer. Players will step into the shoes of a defined protagonist named Kaatri, who possesses a set backstory, rather than crafting their own unique avatar from scratch.

Narrative and Gameplay Philosophy

"We are very clear about this," stated Guay. "Kaatri is a character with her own history. You cannot play a 'good' or 'bad' Kaatri. The key narrative moments are predefined, and you will experience the same sequences as any other player." This departure from the open-ended roleplaying mechanics of Larian's work suggests that Warlock is prioritizing a tighter, more cinematic story delivery.

While the game will lean into Action-RPG elements with immersive sim influences—allowing for creative combat and environmental interaction—it will not rely on the same party-based relationship systems found in its predecessor. Instead, players will navigate this adventure largely solo, though they may encounter companions such as the diablotin Skev along the way.

A Refreshing Take on the Franchise

Invoke Studios aims to leverage the Warlock class's vast array of magical powers to provide dynamic, emergent gameplay. Although comparisons to the success of Baldur's Gate 3 are inevitable, Warlock looks to carve out its own identity when it arrives on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. By focusing on a specific narrative journey and unique class mechanics, the development team hopes to offer a fresh perspective within the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe.
