I have been playing Fire Emblem since I was about 12 years old—a terrifying 19 years ago. Over that extensive timeframe, I have repeatedly revisited the classic entries alongside newer releases, spending countless hours staring at tactical grids. As a passionate advocate during the series' dry spells, I have thoroughly enjoyed its resurgence across the 3DS, Switch, and now the Nintendo Switch 2 generations.

The Biggest World Map Yet

Naturally, my expectations were exceptionally high when I got my hands on Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave for the Nintendo Switch 2. The upgraded hardware promised plenty of room for innovation in a franchise that has traditionally played it safe with grid mechanics. However, rather than completely reinventing the wheel, Fortune's Weave succeeds by perfecting and refining features players have grown to love over decades.

The revamped world map introduces a novel turn-based system that forces you to make calculated decisions about movement and resource management. Instead of engaging in endless free battles that quickly trivialize main missions, players must balance exploration, item hunting, and army leveling against a strict timer. This strategic layer turns downtime outside of combat into a deeply engaging puzzle.

Stunning Battles and Smooth Mechanics

Combat has never looked or played better. While enemy unit placement retains some classic tactical quirks, the overall battle balance feels tighter than ever. Enhanced unit movement predictions minimize frustration, while clearer UI design makes reading the battlefield seamless. It is arguably the best realization of traditional grid-based tactical warfare on any console.

Streamlined Story Routes

Past entries like Fates and Three Houses experimented with branching story routes, but often suffered from rushed character arcs or bloated runtimes. Fortune's Weave brilliantly trims the fat by offering four distinct routes that converge toward the climax. Each path features unique narrative beats and characters, yet ties together cohesively enough to make playing through every route a rewarding experience.

Minor Frustrations

Despite its brilliance, the game isn't without flaws. The newly introduced dungeon-crawling segments feel overly simple and repetitive over time. Additionally, support conversations are noticeably fewer, reducing the depth of some character interactions, and class customization feels slightly more restrictive than in previous iterations.

Ultimately, these minor hiccups pale in comparison to the sheer depth and quality of the overall package. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is a landmark entry for the franchise on Nintendo Switch 2, proving that sometimes the best innovation is simply mastering what came before.
