Introduction to Josef Kubota Wladykaâs Surprising Masterpiece
When viewers think of writer and director Josef Kubota Wladyka, names like "Tokyo Vice," "Narcos," and "The Terror" usually come to mind. Known primarily for his dark, gritty, and violently intense television work and crime thrillers, Wladyka has carved out a distinct niche for himself. However, his Sundance award-winning feature film, "Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!", completely shatters those expectations. Delivering a poignant, deeply intimate, yet hilariously surreal fever dream about love and loss, Wladyka proves he possesses an astonishing and unexpected range.
A Moving Portrait of Grief and Tangos
The film stars Rinko Kikuchi as the titular Haru Kubota, affectionately known as Ha-Chan. Alongside her loving husband, Luis (played by Alejandro Edda), Haru is an amateur tango dancer preparing for the prestigious Tokyo Dance Classic. Tragedy strikes early when Luis suddenly drops dead right in the middle of a dance routine. This devastating moment anchors the emotional core of the film, transforming a straightforward narrative into a deeply felt exploration of grief.
Wladyka brilliantly weaves dream sequences into the fabric of the story. These surreal, dance-filled interludes allow Haru to mentally escape into the depths of her mind, driven by distinct musical cues. However, reality quickly crashes back in when Luisâs estranged family arrives from Mexico intent on bringing his body home, conflicting with Haru's wish for cremation according to Japanese tradition.
Enter Bird Luis and Fedir
The film elevates its surrealism when a kawaii black bird mascot appears before Haru, eventually slow-dancing with her and revealing itself to be the spirit of Luis. As the story progresses months later, Haru is introduced to Fedir (Alberto Guerra), a handsome new instructor at the dance studio. What follows is a complex, unpredictable love triangle that intersects the living, the dead, and a giant bird mascot.
While the first act can occasionally feel slow, the introduction of Fedir breathes incredible energy into the narrative. One standout scene features a confrontation with a drunken businessman that seamlessly morphs into a West Side Story-style brawl before transitioning into a dazzling choreography reminiscent of La La Land.
The Verdict: A Must-Watch Sundance Winner
Despite minor pacing issues in its opening act, "Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!" is an absolute triumphs of modern cinema. Rinko Kikuchi delivers a stunning, career-best performance, and Wladyka's direction rightfully earned him the Directing Award in the Dramatic category at Sundance. It is daring, emotionally resonant, and utterly unique. If you want a cinematic experience unlike anything else released this year, make sure to add this masterpiece to your watchlist.
