For those living in notoriously drizzly regions like Seattle, reliable waterproof outerwear is not just a luxury—it is an absolute necessity. I recently put the Outdoor Research Foray 3L (triple-layer) rain jacket to the test to see if it could rival high-end, premium gear like an Arc'teryx shell.
The Shower Test
To determine if the $260 price tag was worth it, I performed my signature "shower test." Wearing the jacket, I stood under a running shower for three minutes, periodically moving to ensure complete coverage. The results were astounding: despite the heavy, direct water pressure, the jacket kept me bone-dry, with only a negligible amount of moisture near the chin area.
Why It Works
The secret lies in its robust construction. The Foray 3L features three layers of recycled nylon and is finished with a high-performance Nikwax waterproof coating. The addition of fully taped seams and waterproof zipper tracks creates a formidable barrier against the elements.
Features and Performance
Beyond its water resistance, the Foray 3L is surprisingly breathable and flexible, making it ideal for high-exertion activities like hiking or trail running.
- Storage: Two zippered hand pockets and a zippered chest pocket. (Note: It lacks an internal pocket).
- Adjustability: The jacket is highly customizable with an elastic drawcord hem and a cinchable hood with three adjustment points.
- Ventilation: Zippered pit vents allow for temperature regulation during intense movement. While I would have liked mesh lining in these vents to prevent rain ingress when fully open, the overall performance remains top-tier.
The Verdict
While cheaper options exist, the Outdoor Research Foray 3L stands out due to its superior build quality. Its thicker material and fewer seams offer long-term durability that budget-friendly alternatives simply cannot match. If you are an outdoor enthusiast looking for reliable, high-performance gear that doesn't cost $500+, the Foray 3L is a fantastic investment.
