For families looking for the versatility of three-row seating without the bulk and price tag of full-size SUVs, the mid-size segment has become increasingly competitive. I spent a week driving the 2026 Kia Sorento X-Line SX-Prestige and the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT to determine which offers the best value and driving experience.
Design: Conventional vs. Polarizing
The Hyundai Santa Fe leans into a bold, boxy, and retro-futuristic aesthetic. Its signature 'H' LED lights are striking, but the rear styling is divisive, with low-mounted taillights that appear disproportionate. In contrast, the Kia Sorento favors a more conventional, cohesive look, drawing inspiration from the larger Telluride. With its upright grille and sleek, flowing body lines, the Sorento feels more premium and well-balanced.
Performance and Efficiency
Both vehicles are powered by punchy 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The Sorento produces 281 horsepower, while the Santa Fe delivers 277. On the road, both SUVs are surprisingly zippy and agile, proving that three-row utility doesn't have to feel like driving a tank. In terms of fuel economy, the Santa Fe XRT edged out the Sorento in short-distance city driving, while the Sorento proved more efficient during long highway hauls. The results were nearly a tie.
Comfort and Interior
The Kia Sorento takes the win for comfort, largely due to its second-row captain's chairs that provide a more upscale experience. The interior materials, featuring genuine leather and a suede headliner, feel significantly more refined. The Santa Fe, with its standard bench seating, offers slightly more legroom, but the lack of premium finishing and more difficult access to the third row holds it back.
Value and Verdict
While the Hyundai Santa Fe XRT is approximately $4,800 cheaper, the Kia Sorento justifies its higher price with a suite of premium features including a 360-degree camera, Bose audio, and a digital rearview mirror. After a week of testing, the Kia Sorento earns the recommendation as the more complete, well-rounded family vehicle.
