Introduction to The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past
As fans continue to explore the recent release of The Witcher 3 Remastered, developers at Fool's Theory are hard at work on an ambitious upcoming expansion titled Songs of the Past. Slated for release in 2027, this massive DLC promises to deliver the rich, narrative-driven experience that fans of the franchise have come to expect. In a recent interview, creative director Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz shared crucial insights into how the story will fluidly adapt to players' prior actions and completion milestones.
Do You Need to Finish Previous Extensions First?
Chronologically, Songs of the Past takes place several years after the events of Blood and Wine, the acclaimed final expansion of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. At the conclusion of Blood and Wine, Geralt of Rivia typically hangs up his swords to enjoy a peaceful retirement in Toussaint. This raises natural questions about how continuity will be handled for players who approach the new DLC differently.
Fortunately, developers have confirmed that completion of previous expansions is not a mandatory prerequisite. According to Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz, players will be able to dive straight into Songs of the Past immediately after wrapping up the main campaign of the base game. You do not strictly need to finish Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine to enjoy the new adventures, making it accessible while still rewarding dedicated players.
How Player Choices Shape the Narrative
While prior completion is optional, the narrative structure will dynamically alter itself based on what you have accomplished. The creative director emphasized that the studio is weaving past choices directly into the fabric of the story, dialogues, and overarching consequences.
For instance, players who have completed the previous DLCs will notice subtle dialogue changes, specific character fates, and unique gear references that acknowledge their journey. Those who skip them will still experience a cohesive standalone adventure, though completionists will find plenty of extra lore integration by playing everything in order.
Preparing for the Expansion: Playtime and Expectations
With Songs of the Past scheduled to arrive in 2027, players have plenty of time to revisit the continent. The recent launch of the remastered version provides the perfect excuse to replay the epic saga from scratch. To recap the time investment required to experience everything:
- The Witcher 3 (Base Game): Roughly 51 hours for the main story, and double that for completionist runs.
- Hearts of Stone: Around 10 hours for the main quest, stretching to 17 hours for full completion.
- Blood and Wine: Approximately 15 hours for the core narrative, reaching up to 40 hours to explore everything.
Developers have hinted that Songs of the Past will match the substantial scope and duration of Blood and Wine, cementing it as an essential, monumental chapter for fans of the Witcher universe.
