Grand Theft Auto VI is undisputedly the most anticipated release in the history of the gaming industry. With Rockstar Games positioning the title as the cultural phenomenon of the decade, fans have spent over a decade waiting for a new installment. However, despite the immense hype and the near-certain critical acclaim that will follow its release on November 19, 2026, there is a distinct possibility that GTA 6 will not be eligible to compete for the prestigious Game of the Year (GOTY) title at the 2026 Game Awards.
The Calendar Conflict
The primary obstacle facing Rockstarâs masterpiece is its release date. With the 2026 Game Awards ceremony typically scheduled for early Decemberâoften around the 10thâthe window for consideration is remarkably tight. Industry insiders, including former IGN journalist and God of War writer Alanah Pearce, have pointed out that the voting window for the jury often concludes well before the end of the year. For the previous edition, voting wrapped up in mid-November, just weeks before the ceremony. If this timeline holds, GTA 6 would arrive too late to be scrutinized by the jury in time for the nomination phase.
Can It Compete in 2027?
While the prospect of a late-year release could exclude it from the 2026 awards, this does not spell disaster for Rockstar. If the game misses the cutoff for 2026, it would naturally become eligible for the 2027 cycle. The challenge remains the logistical reality of the awards; asking jurors to fully evaluate a massive, 80-hour open-world experience in just a few days is impractical. Whether organizers like Geoff Keighley will adjust the rules to accommodate such a significant cultural event remains to be seen, but as it stands, fans should prepare for the possibility that GTA 6 might wait a year before collecting its inevitable accolades.
