The Foldable Face-Off: Android's Head Start
For years, the foldable smartphone market has been a playground for Android manufacturers, with Samsung leading the charge since the debut of the first Galaxy Fold in 2019. While Apple has remained conspicuously absent from the foldable arena, the upcoming launch of the iPhone Duo has reignited the rivalry. The tension reached a boiling point recently when Samsung took to social media to mock Apple's late entry, suggesting that Apple was simply "reheating leftovers" from the Android camp.
In a recent discussion regarding the new Googlebook push, Sameer Samat, the President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, shared his perspective on Apple's foray into foldable tech. Rather than expressing fear, Samat viewed the move as a validation of a trend Android started long ago.
'Android is Where the Future Happens First'
Samat remained composed and confident when discussing the iPhone Duo. He noted that it is "wonderful" to see Apple finally recognizing that the foldable space is the place to be. However, he didn't miss the opportunity to remind the industry that Android has been the primary incubator for this innovation.
"Android is usually where you see the future first," Samat remarked, highlighting the iterative progress Android devices have made over the last several years. He specifically praised the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a device he uses personally, noting that its massive screen serves as a bridge between mobile productivity and laptop-level work.
The 'Ecosystem Lock' Threat
Despite the confidence from Google, analysts warn that the iPhone Duo could be a disruptive force. Counterpoint Research predicts a significant market share capture for Apple, estimating they could seize 25% of the foldable market in their first year, potentially climbing to 40% by the end of 2027.
The primary driver for this projection isn't necessarily hardware superiority, but the "Apple Ecosystem." Many users who have tried Android foldables report a desire to return to iOS because they are deeply integrated into Apple's suite of services and devices. For these users, the iPhone Duo is the missing piece that finally makes a foldable viable without sacrificing their digital ecosystem.
The Battle for App Optimization
One of the most critical hurdles for any foldable device is app optimization. On many Android foldables, apps still appear as stretched-out phone versions rather than utilizing the expansive screen real estate. Apple appears to be tackling this head-on by partnering closely with developers.
During its recent event, Apple highlighted optimized versions of Slack and Netflix, signaling a intent to provide a more polished software experience from day one. While Samat admitted that some Android apps are still transitioning, he argued that Apple's entry might actually benefit the entire industry. By increasing the total number of foldable users, developers will have a stronger financial incentive to optimize their apps for all foldable platforms, including Android.
A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats
Ultimately, the President of Android views the iPhone Duo not as a killer of the category, but as a catalyst. By bringing the prestige and massive user base of the iPhone to the foldable form factor, Apple is likely to increase general consumer interest in the technology.
"The reality is this form factor is a hit," Samat concluded. "It's growing... and I'm glad to see more people joining what is now the obvious party."
