Finding the perfect balance in running headphones is a challenge that many athletes face. The ideal pair needs to provide exceptional sound quality while remaining secure, comfortable, and crucially, allowing the runner to maintain awareness of their surroundings. Over the past week, I decided to test the Apple AirPods 5 as a replacement for my trusty Shokz OpenDots 2 during my regular runs. Having clocked in around 50 miles, here is a breakdown of my experience.

Why I Switched to the AirPods 5

In-ear buds often provide superior audio but frequently leave users feeling isolated, while open-ear designs offer safety but often lack sound depth. The AirPods 5 occupy a unique space in the market, balancing these two worlds. Their semi-open architecture provides a level of sound quality that I found noticeably better than traditional bone conduction or fully-open devices, all while utilizing transparency mode to keep me connected to my environment.

The Wins: 4 Things I Love

  1. Comfort and Security: I was pleasantly surprised by the fit. Unlike many earhook designs that can be cumbersome, these are lightweight and pressure-free. Even when wearing a headband over them, they remained securely in place for long durations.
  2. Situational Awareness: By choosing the semi-open design, I avoid the 'occlusion effect'—that annoying sound of my own footsteps thumping in my ears—which is common with standard in-ear buds. Plus, there is significantly less wind noise.
  3. Superior Sound and ANC: When I need a boost during a tough run, the AirPods 5 deliver impressive power and bass. Furthermore, the active noise cancellation is the most effective I have encountered in an open-ear design, making them versatile enough for travel.
  4. Durability with IP57: The upgrade to an IP57 water and dust resistance rating provides peace of mind. While I don't plan on submerging them, knowing they can withstand sweat and heavy rain—and that this protection extends to the case—is a massive plus.

The Challenges: 2 Things I Don't

  1. Battery Life Limitations: The trade-off for their compact size and weight is a shorter battery life. At five hours per charge, they fall short of the 10-hour benchmarks set by competitors like the Shokz OpenDots 2. While they charge quickly, it’s an adjustment for those used to longer-lasting gear.
  2. Universal Fit Issues: While the AirPods 5 fit me perfectly, the design is not universal. If they do not suit the specific contours of your ears, no amount of sound quality will make up for the frustration of them slipping out. For those who find them insecure, third-party silicone wings might help, though they are an inconvenient extra step.

Final Thoughts

If you are lucky enough to have ears that accommodate the Apple AirPods 5, they are arguably the best running headphones currently available. They successfully marry the safety of an open design with the premium sound and ANC features we expect from Apple. While the battery life requires more frequent attention, the experience they offer makes them a permanent fixture in my running kit.
