Introduction: A Mixed Bag in Handheld Gaming
The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 arrives with plenty of physical upgrades, including a mesmerizing 7.4-inch OLED display and refined ergonomics. However, with an eye-watering $1,299 price tag and internal specifications that mirror its predecessor, it forces gamers to weigh luxury against raw performance.
Design and Ergonomics
Asus has significantly improved the overall handling of the device. The transparent chassis is visually striking, complemented by high-effective rubberized grips that drastically reduce hand fatigue during extended gaming sessions. Furthermore, the inclusion of a versatile rotatable D-Pad allows users to seamlessly switch between a standard 4-way layout for platformers and an 8-way setup tailored for fighting games.
The OLED Display
The standout feature of the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is undeniably its 7.4-inch FHD OLED panel. Offering a 120Hz refresh rate, exceptional brightness averaging nearly 580 nits, and vibrant color accuracy, it leaves many competitor screens in the dust. Games like Forza Horizon 6 and Silksong pop with incredible contrast and immersive black levels.
Performance and the $300 Price Hike
Despite the high-end exterior, the internal hardware remains largely unchanged from previous iterations, featuring the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. While adequate for moderate titles, heavy AAA games struggle natively, requiring heavy reliance on upscaling technologies like FSR. When compared to newer Intel Arc G3-powered alternatives on the market, the $300 price jump over the previous generation feels heavily inflated to cover rising component costs rather than delivering a generational performance leap.
Verdict
The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 is an exceptional piece of engineering hampered by its luxury pricing. If visual fidelity via an OLED screen and superior handheld ergonomics are your absolute top priorities, it delivers. For everyone else, the steep $1,299 cost makes it a difficult recommendation in an increasingly competitive handheld market.
