The Last of Us Part II: Too Long for Adult Gamers?
While The Last of Us Part II remains one of the most critically acclaimed and discussed titles in video game history, its massive length continues to be a point of contention. A former Naughty Dog developer has recently stepped forward to voice what many mature players have been thinking for years.
Matt Radford, an ex-artist at the renowned studio who contributed to projects like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and The Last of Us: Left Behind, recently shared his unfiltered perspective during an appearance on the Kiwi Talkz podcast. Reflecting on his gaming habits as a 38-year-old industry veteran with limited free time, Radford admitted that he found the sequel's runtime to be quite exhausting.
The Intimidation Factor of Modern Blockbusters
Expressing a sentiment shared by many gamers over 30, Radford explained that massive, sprawling titles can often feel intimidating rather than inviting when balancing a career and adult life.
"Iâm 38 years old, and I think there's something intimidating about a GTA 6 or another The Elder Scrolls," Radford noted. Instead of hundred-hour epics, he finds himself leaning toward more concise, focused experiences that deliver a powerful punch without requiring a massive time investment. Comparing modern trends to classics of the past, he fondly recalled the tight 6-to-8-hour pacing of the original Uncharted trilogy.
An Industry Trend Toward Longer Campaigns
Radford's commentary highlights a growing divide in the modern gaming market. With countless releases crowding release calendars every monthâranging from massive action RPGs to dense narrative adventuresâmany players struggle to keep up with the sheer volume of content. At roughly 24 hours according to platform tracking data, The Last of Us Part II stands as the longest single-player narrative game in Naughty Dog's history.
As major studios continue to push the boundaries of scale and ambitionâwith Naughty Dog's upcoming project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, promising even greater depthâthe debate surrounding game longevity and respect for the player's time is only set to grow louder.
