PlayStation Portal Receives Major 7.3.0 Update: What's New and Why It Matters

Sony has just released a significant firmware update for its dedicated remote-play device, the PlayStation Portal. Jumping to version 7.3.0, this latest patch is the second update in just one month, demonstrating Sony's ongoing commitment to refining the hardware experience for PS5 users. While the previous update focused on battery longevity by introducing an 80% charge limit, this new version adds highly requested features to the ecosystem.

Key Additions in Update 7.3.0

The most prominent feature in this release is the official integration of 3D Audio for the handheld. Users can now toggle this setting directly via the device's system menu, navigating to Settings > System > Audio 3D. This brings a more immersive sonic environment to the handheld streaming experience, bridging the gap between console-based play and the portable interface.

Beyond audio, Sony has overhauled the search functionality. Users will now benefit from:

• Real-time search results that appear instantly as you type.
• The ability to scan a QR code to continue shopping or searching on the PlayStation Store via your smartphone or a web browser.
• General stability improvements and enhanced UI messaging throughout the system.

A Sign of Future Hardware Plans?

The rapid succession of updates for the PlayStation Portal has fueled speculation regarding the device's future. With recent reports suggesting that new models have received hardware certifications, rumors persist that Sony may be working on a premium version of the Portal—potentially featuring an OLED display. While these claims remain unconfirmed, the increased frequency of system-level improvements suggests that Sony is viewing the Portal as a long-term, evolving platform rather than a static accessory. Whether this signals a forthcoming Pro model or simply a period of aggressive optimization, players stand to benefit from a more polished and capable handheld device.
