As a runner who has tackled 17 marathons, I have learned that the secret to sustaining high-volume training is not just in the miles you put on your legs, but in the precision of your fuel. During my current preparation for the Frankfurt Marathon, I have been logging 80 miles per week, a personal milestone that demands strict attention to energy, recovery, and hydration.

The Essentials of High-Mileage Fueling

While a balanced diet full of vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates forms the foundation of my nutrition, I rely heavily on specific supplements for my most intense sessions. Over-relying on supplements is a mistake, but for peak weeks, they are essential to bridge the energy gap.

Energy: Managing the Carb Load

For fueling during runs, Maurten remains my top choice. Unlike many other brands, Maurten’s hydrogel technology allows me to consume large amounts of carbohydrates without stomach distress.

  • Maurten Drink Mix 320: This provides 80g of carbs in a 500ml serving, which I use before and during long, grueling workouts.
  • Maurten Gel Mix 480: A newer addition to my kit, this allows me to carry 120g of carbohydrates in a single 350ml soft flask, making long-run nutrition management much simpler.

Recovery: Post-Run Repair

After sessions, especially those that involve heavy training loads, I turn to the SiS REGO Clear Recovery powder. It is a refreshing, light alternative to traditional, heavy protein shakes. Providing 20g of protein and 21g of carbohydrates, it effectively jumpstarts the recovery process so I can tackle my next session with less fatigue.

Hydration: Balancing Sodium

While hydration needs vary, I find that a strategic intake of electrolytes is necessary during my longest, sweat-intensive runs. I prefer Precision Fueling & Hydration (PF&H) 1000 Electrolytes because of their high sodium content and transparent nutritional labeling. I typically dissolve one sachet in 500ml of water to ensure I am adequately replenishing what is lost through sweat. For runs under 90 minutes, however, I usually skip the extra electrolytes, relying on plain water and proper pre-run hydration.

Consistency and finding what works for your specific stomach are the keys to long-distance success. While these products form my personal "secret sauce" for marathon success, remember that your base diet should always come first.
