Introduction: A New Chapter in Horror Gaming
The last decade has been a phenomenal boom period for video games based on classic horror movie franchises. We have seen adaptations of icons like Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Predator, and Saw, alongside the ongoing success of Dead by Daylight, which continually crosses over with fan-favorite properties from A Nightmare on Elm Street to Scream. However, most of these experiences lean heavily into asymmetrical multiplayer. Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival bucks this trend, offering a single-player survival horror experience set in the iconic, brutal lore of the original films.
We Have Such Sights to Show You
Players step into the shoes of Aidan Lynch, a gruff and somewhat unlikable biker who unwillingly summons Pinhead and his terrifying Cenobites—extradimensional beings described memorably as "demons to some, angels to others." This fateful summoning occurs during a provocative evening with his girlfriend, Sunny, when they accidentally activate a mysterious puzzle box known as the Genesis Configuration. When Pinhead and his grotesque cohorts whisk Sunny away to the depths of their hellish dimension, Aidan must embark on a grim rescue mission. While the premise is a standard "save the girl" plot, the execution is drenched in a thick layer of blood, guts, and profoundly graphic imagery.
True to the Hellraiser IP, Revival pulls zero punches when it comes to visual intensity. The game features an extraordinary amount of explicit content, ranging from grotesque body horror to frequent sexualized shock value. Early on, players collect adult novelties for a leather-clad NPC, establishing a tone that pushes boundaries. While this commitment to source-material authenticity is commendable, the frequency of such elements occasionally crosses from shocking to gratuitous. This is particularly evident with the Scarlet Church, a new Cenobite-obsessed cult introduced in the game that Aidan must hide from and violently dismantle using firearms and melee weapons.
A Revival, But Not a Gameplay Revolution
Structurally, Hellraiser: Revival heavily borrows from modern survival horror mainstays, drawing direct inspiration from recent entries in the Resident Evil franchise. The gameplay loop consists of creeping through the labyrinthine corridors of the Scarlet Church's base, scrounging for limited ammunition, managing breakable melee weapons, solving key puzzles, and unlocking new areas.
Combat can be handled directly or through stealth, but the standout feature is the Genesis Configuration itself. Integrated into Aidan’s arsenal, the puzzle box grants supernatural abilities like pyrokinesis and telekinesis, allowing players to weaponize environmental objects by hurling sharp implements to impale enemies against walls. Furthermore, brief departures from the church's repetitive corridors—such as navigating surreal Cenobite labyrinths or experiencing a chilling homage to the infamous P.T. demo—showcase the game at its atmospheric peak.
Unfortunately, the true terror of Hellraiser: Revival stems less from its monstrous antagonists and more from its severe technical instability. Throughout the 10-hour campaign on the PS5 Pro, players encounter persistent bugs, including delayed texture loading, character models clipping into furniture, and severe framerate dips during hectic combat. As the game progresses, issues compound: save stations fail, inventory storage glitches can permanently delete essential weapons like the revolver, and final boss encounters frequently freeze. A final cutscene glitch resulting in looping, unintelligible audio caps off the experience on a deeply disappointing technical note.
Should You Play Hellraiser: Revival This Halloween?
As the spooky season approaches, the appetite for new horror games is at an annual peak. At a budget-friendly price point of $39 / £34, Saber Interactive's title undercuts standard $69 industry pricing, making it an enticing proposition for die-hard fans of Clive Barker's universe. However, in a crowded year featuring exceptional horror releases like Resident Evil: Requiem and Silent Hill: Townfall, Hellraiser: Revival is difficult to recommend in its current, bug-riddled state. Dedicated franchise enthusiasts may find value in waiting until patches smooth out its rough edges by Halloween 2027.
