Amazon has officially retired its decade-old Fire OS, signaling a major strategic shift in its hardware division. The company has announced a brand-new lineup of tablets that move away from the proprietary Fire operating system, opting instead for a standard Android experience. This transition marks the end of the 'Fire Tablet' era, as Amazon pivots toward a more integrated, high-performance future.

The New Alexa Tablet Lineup

The new series introduces two primary categories: the professional-grade 'Alexa Tablet' series and the redesigned 'Amazon Kids' tablets. Across these devices, Amazon is introducing 'Alexa+', an AI-powered assistant that lives as a persistent widget in the bottom-right corner of the interface. Unlike previous iterations of Alexa, Alexa+ is context-aware, allowing it to analyze on-screen content and assist with tasks—such as identifying objects in photographs or providing real-time assistance based on what the user is viewing.

Hardware Upgrades and Productivity

The flagship of the new collection is the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. Constructed with a premium aluminum unibody, the device features a 12-inch, 280 PPI display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 500 nits. Amazon is also offering an optional nanomatte display, developed in partnership with Corning, which drastically reduces glare while maintaining high color accuracy and contrast. The tablet includes a 4nm 8-core processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and is designed with a 3:2 aspect ratio, specifically tailored for productivity. The device also supports a magnetic stylus and a specialized keyboard cover for users who require a laptop-like experience.

Focused Entertainment: The Tablet 11 and 8

For those prioritizing media consumption, the Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 offers a 2.5K display in a 16:10 aspect ratio, optimized for movies and streaming. Meanwhile, the entry-level Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 serves as a compact, portable companion. Both devices feature updated 8-core processors, Dolby Atmos speakers, and significantly improved battery life, with the 11-inch model lasting up to 15 hours and the 8-inch model offering up to 14 hours of playback.

The New 'Kindle Mode'

A standout feature across the new hardware is the introduction of 'Kindle Mode.' Upon opening the Kindle app, the tablet intelligently silences notifications and adjusts the color temperature and display contrast to mimic the experience of a dedicated e-reader, significantly reducing eye strain during long reading sessions.

Amazon Kids Tablets

Amazon has not neglected its younger users, launching new 8.7-inch and 11-inch Kids Tablets. These devices maintain the robust parental control features users expect, now housed in more durable, kid-friendly bumper cases featuring popular franchises like Barbie and Paw Patrol. These models also include a simplified, child-safe version of the new Alexa+ assistant.

Availability and Outlook

The new tablet range will be available in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada starting October 14, 2026, followed by a launch in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19, 2026. While the increased price points—starting at $229.99 for the 8-inch model—reflect a move toward more premium hardware, the switch to a cleaner Android-based interface and the inclusion of advanced AI features like Alexa+ suggest a concerted effort by Amazon to compete directly with high-end Android and tablet competitors.
