In an era where digital footprints are increasingly hard to manage, many homeowners are concerned about the level of detail available on mapping platforms. Apple Maps, through its 'Look Around' feature, offers high-resolution, street-level imagery that provides a clear view of your property, including windows, front doors, and security configurations. While this is great for navigation, it can pose a security concern for those who prefer to keep their home details private from the public.

Why You Should Consider Blurring Your Home

Digital privacy is about minimizing your attack surface. By displaying your home in high definition, public mapping services inadvertently provide potential bad actors with a blueprint of your home's exterior security measures, such as cameras, entry points, or alarm systems. Blurring your home acts as a simple, effective deterrent, limiting the amount of personal information available to anyone with an internet connection.

How to Request a Blur in Apple Maps

If your home is visible in Apple's Look Around feature, you can request that it be obscured. Follow these steps:

  1. Open Apple Maps on your device or browser and search for your home address.
  2. Look for the binoculars icon. If it appears, your location has Look Around imagery available. If not, your home is not currently visible in this format.
  3. Once in the street-level view, swipe up to see the details card or click the three-dot menu icon on a desktop browser.
  4. Select 'Report an Issue.'
  5. Choose 'Privacy Concerns' from the list of options.
  6. Select 'Obscure imagery of my home' (or 'Obscure personal information' if you only wish to hide a vehicle).
  7. Verify your address, enter your email, and submit. Apple will review your request and may reach out for proof of residency before the change is finalized.

The Alternative: Email Requests

If the in-app tool is inaccessible, you can email Apple directly at [email protected]. Be sure to provide your full name, the specific address, and a clear screenshot of the imagery you want removed. While this process is manual and takes time, it is a definitive step toward securing your home's digital footprint.
