The Quest for the Perfect Monitor
If you are a professional or a creative looking for the ultimate desktop upgrade, Apple’s Studio Display and the high-end Studio Display XDR are natural contenders. However, with entry-level prices starting at $1,599 and climbing rapidly for upgrades like nano-texture glass and adjustable stands, these monitors represent a significant financial commitment. At Tom’s Guide, we have been testing various alternatives to see if you can achieve a professional-grade experience without breaking the bank.
Enter the Innocn CB32U1
While models like the BenQ MA270S and MSI Pro Max 271UPXW12G offer great value at the 27-inch mark, there is a compelling argument for moving up to a 32-inch display. After spending the past month with the Innocn CB32U1, it is clear that for many users, this size is a game-changer. Not only does it provide more screen real estate, but its 160Hz refresh rate and dual HDMI 2.1 ports make it surprisingly capable for both high-end productivity and competitive gaming.
Design and Connectivity
Innocn continues to impress with their accessory-rich packaging. The CB32U1 arrives with a full set of cables, eliminating the need to search through your own supply. The monitor features a sleek white aesthetic with silver trim, allowing it to blend into any modern desk setup. Crucially, the rear port layout is flat rather than underside-mounted, making cable management significantly cleaner and more convenient. With 90W of power delivery over USB-C, it is perfectly tailored for seamless MacBook integration.
Performance: Work and Play
The IPS panel on the CB32U1 is sharp, clear, and features a matte anti-glare coating that holds its own in bright environments. For professional creative work, the color accuracy is highly commendable for the price point. Furthermore, the 160Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync support provide a smooth gaming experience that caters to console gamers and PC users alike. The inclusion of two HDMI 2.1 ports ensures that you can get the most out of a PS5 or Xbox Series X, something many dedicated productivity monitors lack.
The Trade-offs
Of course, there are compromises. The CB32U1 lacks an integrated webcam and, unlike previous Innocn models I have reviewed, does not include built-in speakers. However, these are easily remedied with third-party peripherals like an under-monitor soundbar or a quality webcam, which—even when purchased separately—still leaves you spending far less than you would on an Apple display. While the use of an external power brick is a minor drawback compared to a built-in power supply, the overall flexibility of this monitor makes it a superior choice for a multi-device, hybrid workstation.
Final Verdict
After a month of daily use, I have found no reason to revert to my previous Apple display or gaming-specific monitor. The Innocn CB32U1 offers a rare balance of aesthetic appeal, professional-grade performance, and gaming-ready specs. If you are looking for a 32-inch display that handles everything from spreadsheets to high-octane gaming sessions without a premium price tag, this is a monitor that deserves a spot on your desk.
