Apple has a long-standing tradition of keeping its battery capacities under wraps, preferring to market energy efficiency through 'video playback hours' rather than raw milliampere-hour (mAh) figures. However, the mystery surrounding the latest flagship devices has been solved. Thanks to a comprehensive teardown by the hardware experts at iFixit, the official battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have finally been revealed.
The iPhone 18 Pro: Incremental Gains, Real-World Results
According to the iFixit findings, the North American version of the iPhone 18 Pro features a battery capacity of 4,288mAh. When compared to the iPhone 17 Pro's 4,252mAh cell, this represents a modest increase of approximately 1%.
While a 1% bump in raw capacity might seem negligible on paper, real-world testing tells a different story. Benchmarks indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro can last up to 16 hours and 17 minutes—a full hour more than the 15 hours and 17 minutes recorded for the 17 Pro. This efficiency leap is largely attributed to the new A20 chip, which manages power significantly better than its predecessor, the A19.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max: A Substantial Power Boost
The Pro Max model has seen a far more aggressive upgrade. The iFixit teardown reveals a massive 5,567mAh battery for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This is a 9.41% increase over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which housed a 5,088mAh battery in its eSIM configuration.
Surprisingly, this nearly 10% increase in capacity did not lead to a proportional explosion in battery life. In standardized tests, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted 18 hours and 27 minutes, barely edging out the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 17 hours and 54 minutes. This suggests that the more powerful components of the 18 Pro Max may be consuming the additional energy provided by the larger cell.
Regional Discrepancies: US vs. EU Models
An interesting detail emerged regarding regional hardware differences. While the US models rely on eSIM technology, European models often maintain physical SIM slots. Data from EU Energy Labels suggests that the European iPhone 18 Pro has a smaller 4,056mAh battery, while the EU Pro Max offers 5,391mAh. These discrepancies highlight how internal layout changes to accommodate physical SIM trays can impact the space available for the battery.
The Cost of Power: Higher Prices and Repair Fees
With these hardware updates comes a higher price tag. Apple has increased the base price for the 256GB models of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by $100. Furthermore, maintaining these devices has become more expensive. Apple now charges $129 (plus tax) for battery replacements— a $10 increase over last year's pricing. This trend makes AppleCare+ an increasingly attractive option for users looking to avoid high out-of-pocket repair costs.
