Introduction
When it comes to daily running shoes, Hoka has built a massive following by offering maximum cushioning and ultra-comfortable rides. Two of their most popular models, the Hoka Clifton 11 and the Hoka Bondi 9, represent the pinnacle of plush comfort. Having spent over a decade testing running shoes and trying nearly the entire Hoka lineup, I put these two sneakers head-to-head over dozens of miles to see which one truly deserves a spot in your rotation.
Price Comparison
At full retail price, the Hoka Clifton 11 is the more budget-friendly option, coming in at $155 compared to the $175 price tag of the Hoka Bondi 9. However, because the Bondi 9 has been on the market longer, it frequently pops up in sales—sometimes discounted down to $140. When the Clifton 11 eventually sees similar markdowns, it will likely retake the crown as the cheaper everyday trainer.
Design and Fit
Both models feature breathable mesh uppers prioritizing long-term comfort over strict weight savings, complete with generous padding around the collar and tongue. In terms of sizing, both shoes fit true to length, though like many Hoka models, they feature a slightly snug midfoot. Fortunately, both standard and wide/extra-wide options are available.
The stack heights differ significantly: the Bondi 9 stands at 43mm in the heel and 38mm in the forefoot (a 5mm drop), whereas the Clifton 11 measures 42mm in the heel and 34mm in the forefoot (an 8mm drop). Because of its extra cushioning, the Bondi 9 weighs about 11 ounces for a US men's size 9.5, making it nearly a full ounce heavier than the Clifton 11 at 10.1 ounces.
Midsole and Outsole Performance
The midsole represents the most striking difference between the two shoes. While both rely on EVA foam, the Bondi 9 utilizes a supercritical version, making it less dense and notably more responsive than the compression-molded foam found in the Clifton 11. Furthermore, the Bondi 9's lower drop highlights the Clifton 11's more aggressive and smooth rocker geometry, which rolls you effortlessly toward your toes.
Both models feature robust rubber coverage across high-impact zones on the outsole, ensuring long-lasting durability with very little sign of premature wear even after extensive mileage.
Running Performance
Running roughly 35 miles in the Clifton 11 and 40 miles in the Bondi 9 revealed distinct personalities. The Bondi 9 delivers exceptional impact absorption, making it wonderfully plush for slow, easy miles. However, it feels slightly cumbersome and sluggish when you try to pick up the pace, with a blocky toe-off sensation.
Conversely, the Clifton 11 is lighter and much more versatile. While it isn't an out-and-out speed shoe, its smooth rocker geometry and lighter weight make daily strides, steady runs, and varied paces feel significantly more natural and fluid.
The Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?
If you are looking for a reliable, versatile daily running shoe that handles steady paces as easily as recovery jogs, the Hoka Clifton 11 is the clear winner. It offers a lighter, more nimble ride. However, if your primary goal is maximum cushion for walking, standing all day, or purely easy-paced runs, the softer Bondi 9 takes the crown. Alternatively, if you want the best of both worlds, consider the Hoka Clifton Pro, which combines the responsive supercritical foam of the Bondi with the refined rocker geometry of the Clifton.
