Entering the Kingdom Hearts Universe
For many gamers, there exists a list of 'gaming blind spots'—those long-running, celebrated franchises that we have always intended to experience but never quite got around to. For me, Kingdom Hearts has sat at the very pinnacle of my personal 'list of gaming shame.' The blend of iconic Disney characters with the moody, complex aesthetics of Final Fantasy seemed like a unique experiment that I eventually felt I had missed the boat on. However, the release of the comprehensive Kingdom Hearts Collection on the new Nintendo Switch 2 has provided the perfect catalyst for a newcomer like me to finally step onto the island of Destiny Islands.
A Rough Start, A Promising Path
The initial experience of the first Kingdom Hearts game is, admittedly, a bit dated. While the Nintendo Switch 2 brings a boost to resolution and framerate, one cannot escape the fact that this is fundamentally a PlayStation 2-era title. Beyond the visuals, the opening hours are hindered by somewhat mundane level design. Spending my early gameplay time gathering coconuts and searching for rope to escape a small island felt far from the epic, world-spanning adventure I was promised.
The Shift to Narrative Hooks
Things changed significantly once I transitioned to Traverse Town. As the plot thickened and Sora was introduced to legendary characters from both the Disney and Square Enix universes, the game truly began to shine. Despite the clunky mechanics that feel archaic compared to modern action-RPGs, the story's depth and the emotional resonance of the journey kept me fully engaged. I was no longer just looking at a retro game; I was falling into an expansive, heartfelt saga.
Why the Switch 2 is the Ideal Console
The Kingdom Hearts Collection is a massive undertaking, featuring seven playable games and three HD movie compilations. Having the ability to play this sprawling epic in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive advantage. Being able to chip away at these adventures in short bursts makes the intimidating scale of the franchise feel much more manageable. For anyone who has felt overwhelmed by the series' history, this collection offers a structured and accessible path to finally catch up before the highly anticipated release of Kingdom Hearts 4 in late 2027.
