For many ChatGPT users, the artificial intelligence model has traditionally served as a responsive tool within a chat windowâyou type a prompt, wait for an answer, and then take that output elsewhere yourself. OpenAI is looking to redefine that workflow with the introduction of ChatGPT Dots.
What Are ChatGPT Dots?
Announced by OpenAI, Dots are persistent AI agents equipped with their own isolated virtual computer in the cloud. Unlike traditional interactions, these agents can actively browse the web, utilize connected applications, and continue executing complex tasks even when you are away from your screen. Instead of managing every step of a multi-part process, users can hand an entire job over to a Dot.
How ChatGPT's Virtual Computer Works
Each Dot operates inside a secure, cloud-based virtual machine, meaning it doesn't take over your local computer or clutter your browser with endless tabs. While fully isolated by default, a Dot can be granted specific permissions to interact with your local setup or link up with more than 4,000 external applications through plugins. Furthermore, communication isn't restricted to the ChatGPT dashboard; users can reach their Dots via voice calls, team platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams, and eventually even SMS text messaging.
Real-World Use Cases
Dots shine when tackling annoying everyday chores or complex multi-step administrative duties. For instance, rather than simply asking where to order dinner, you can instruct a Dot to browse various delivery services, build itemized cart estimates accounting for local taxes and tips, and present a neat comparison for your final approval. Similarly, in a workplace environment, a Dot can ingest a video transcript, generate social media captions, clip highlights, and organize deliverables across connected platforms.
Security and Pricing Details
Given the autonomous nature of persistent agents, security and privacy are top priorities. OpenAI has designed Dots with strict read-only parameters for background research, meaning an agent can gather information while you are away without independently sending messages, deleting files, or spending money. Credentials are safely managed without exposing passwords to the underlying model, and personal local files remain entirely separate.
Currently rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and select Enterprise beta users, Dots are included at no additional charge for the first user on Pro subscriptions, marking a monumental shift in how users interact with AI beyond the standard chat window.
