RedMagic Astra 2 Review: A High-End Gaming Tablet That Rivals the iPad Mini

Introduction to the RedMagic Astra 2

The RedMagic Astra 2 could easily be mistaken for an iPad mini at first glance, thanks to its compact 9-inch design and sleek rounded corners. However, beneath its premium exterior lies a mobile powerhouse driven by Qualcomm's elite processing architecture and generous RAM configurations, positioning it as a stellar option for portable gaming enthusiasts and power users alike.

Design and Build Quality

Measuring 8.15 x 5.28 x 0.27 inches, the Astra 2 slightly outpaces the iPad mini to accommodate its 9.06-inch display panel. Featuring an anodized aluminum frame, glossy screen finish, and an integrated fingerprint scanner within the power button, it offers a secure, premium feel in hand. However, it also features a subtle nod to its gaming pedigree: a 3D vapor chamber for cooling with customizable RGB lighting and a transparent glass strip on top.

Display Performance

The device's 185Hz OLED display steals the show with deep blacks, stunning contrast ratios, and exceptional color accuracy. Symmetrical 4.9mm bezels ensure an immersive viewing experience, making it ideal for streaming movies and playing high-refresh-rate mobile games.

Gaming and Performance

Equipped with top-tier processing hardware and extensive LPDDR5X RAM, the Astra 2 handles demanding Android titles effortlessly. Furthermore, its PC emulation capabilities via the GameHub app allow users to run full PC games like Portal 2 smoothly, transforming the compact tablet into a versatile handheld console.

The Downsides

Despite its remarkable strengths, the Astra 2 comes with a steep price tag and lacks bundled accessories like a folio case or screen protector. Additionally, its primary, full-featured USB-C port is positioned off-center, which can make using certain telescopic game controllers quite awkward.

Verdict

If you desire flagship performance, a brilliant OLED screen, and console-level portability in a compact form factor, the RedMagic Astra 2 stands out as one of the finest Android tablets available today.
