The Shift in Display Technology

Samsung, a brand historically synonymous with QLED technology, is reportedly planning a strategic shift that could see these popular displays phased out by 2028. According to reports from the South Korean outlet ETNews, the electronics giant is significantly scaling back its production, with projections showing a massive drop from 10 million units annually to a mere 2 to 3 million. This decision marks a fundamental shift for a company that spearheaded the 'QLED' movement as a direct competitor to high-end television standards.

The Rise of Micro RGB

While the reduction of QLED availability may seem like a setback for budget-conscious home theater enthusiasts, industry experts suggest there is a clear 'silver lining.' Samsung is heavily pivoting toward Micro RGB technology. Unlike traditional QLED panels that rely on quantum dots to enhance color, Micro RGB sets utilize a sophisticated arrangement of red, green, and blue backlights to deliver superior vibrancy and color accuracy.

Why This Matters for Shoppers

For consumers, this transition signals a move away from the traditional Neo QLED hierarchy. Interestingly, some newer iterations of the Neo QLED line have already begun stripping away advanced hardware-based local dimming, signaling that the manufacturer is reallocating resources toward its next-generation display solutions.

Though currently positioned at a higher price point, the expansion of the Micro RGB lineup is expected to drive down costs as production scales. With two distinct models, the R85H and the R95H, already on the market, it is clear that Samsung is positioning Micro RGB to become the new standard for its mid-to-high-end non-OLED portfolio. As the technology matures, shoppers can likely expect more affordable, high-performance options that rival current premium offerings.
