The End of Fire OS
After more than a decade of powering Amazon's budget-friendly slate devices, Fire OS and the iconic "Fire" moniker are officially coming to an end. Following a similar shift away from Android on its Fire TV sticks, Amazon has announced a complete brand overhaul for its tablet ecosystem, pivoting entirely to Google's Android operating system. The newly rebranded Amazon Alexa tablets ditch the restrictive, heavily customized Fire interface in favor of a modern, flexible Android experience integrated deeply with Amazon's ecosystem.
Meet Alexa+ and Kindle Mode
The standout feature of this new generation is the integration of Alexa+, positioned prominently as a persistent widget in the lower right-hand corner of the display. Unlike traditional voice assistants, Alexa+ is context-aware; it can examine whatever is currently on your tablet's screen and act on your prompts. For instance, if you take a photo of a plant and display it, Alexa+ can instantly identify it and provide detailed care instructions.
Another major software addition is "Kindle Mode." When users open the Kindle app, the tablet intelligently silences notifications and adjusts its display settings to mute colors, mimicking the look and feel of a dedicated e-reader to minimize distractions during reading sessions.
The New Lineup: From the 12 Pro to Kids Editions
Amazon's fresh hardware lineup includes five new models—three general-purpose Alexa Tablets and two specialized Kids Tablets:
- Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: The headlining device features a 12-inch, 280 PPI display (2800x1840) with a 120Hz refresh rate, 3:2 aspect ratio, and 500 nits of peak brightness. Built with a premium aluminum unibody, it measures 6.5mm thick. It offers an optional nanomatte display developed with Corning to drastically reduce glare while preserving contrast. Powered by a 4nm 8-core chip with up to 16GB of RAM, it starts at $499.99 (glossy) and $549.99 (nanomatte). Accessories like the Pro Pen ($89.99) and Pro Keyboard ($149.99) are sold separately.
- Amazon Alexa Tablet 11: Tailored for entertainment, this model features a 2.5K display (2560x1600) with a 90Hz refresh rate in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Equipped with dual Dolby Atmos speakers and up to 15 hours of video playback battery life, it starts at $329.99 and comes in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha.
- Amazon Alexa Tablet 8: A compact option with an 8.7-inch (1340x800) display, weighing just 11.6 ounces. It starts at $229.99 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, available in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.
- Amazon Kids Tablets (8-inch and 11-inch): Built for younger audiences, these devices come packaged with durable bumper cases featuring popular themes like Paw Patrol and Barbie. They retain robust parental controls alongside a kid-friendly version of the Alexa+ interface. The 8-inch kid's model starts at $229.99, while the 11-inch version starts at $329.99.
Outlook and Release Details
The new Amazon Alexa tablets will hit shelves in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada on October 14, followed by the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19. While the shift to Android and premium aluminum designs makes these devices much more capable and responsive than their predecessors—even allowing users to set Google Gemini as their default voice assistant—they are notably more expensive than older Fire HD devices. This price increase reflects both the upgraded materials and the realities of modern electronics manufacturing, but time will tell if budget-conscious consumers embrace the change.
